A news for Karnataka state students and reason for them to rejoice as soon, each student in the State of Karnataka will have a nine-digit unique code that will be tagged to his or her academic life under the School Tracking System (STS). The number will be linked to data on their academic performance, details of schools, scholarships, and awards received.

The similar project was proposed by Ministry of Human Resources Development before year ago keeping in the mind that the data collection and putting together of multiple software used by various schools to enroll their students was a laborious process that took over a year and a half. The work is now complete and the education department is all set to take it forward to achieve the aims of ASMITA and track the academic achievements of the student from the coming academic year in June. HRD ministry also created Swayam Prabha Scheme where it introduced the 32 new channels.

ASMITA – All Schools Monitoring Individual Tracing Analysis

The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has decided to launch ASMITA, a student tracking system programme. ASMITA is acronym for All School Monitoring Individual Tracing Analysis and shall be launched under Shala Asmita Yojana (SAY).

Key facts
  • SAY aims to track the educational journey of school students from Class I to Class XII across the 15 lakhs private and government schools in the country.

  • ASMITA will be an online database which will carry information of student attendance and enrolment, learning outcomes, mid-day meal service and infrastructural facilities among others.

  • Students will be tracked through their Aadhaar numbers and incase those not having unique number will be provided with it.

A nine-digit code to help track a student’s academic records

Karnataka’s nine-digit number is a departure from the system that is used in other states so far, as directed by the central ministry. Initially, Karnataka was also using the same 17-digit Unified District Information for Education (UDISE) numbers that identified the student through district, block and school code, besides year of admission.

However, this system, while just recording basic information like the student’s name, father’s name and so on, has the problem of not allowing the student to be tracked if he or she changes school.

“Our nine-digit number tracks the student, wherever he or she goes. The principal at the new school just has to go online to get all his or her records, which we will keep in a digi-locker. So, if the marks that the student scored in Class III in the first mathematics test is needed, it will be instantly available and will reflect the path the student’s learning took,” programme officer and assistant director of public instruction Purushothama Kumar explained. “We have moved from STS (student tracking system) in other states to SATS (student achievement tracking system) for the first time in the country.”

The biggest benefit of the tracking system, department sources said, was in stemming the dropout rate. It will also help in streamlining incentives that a child avails of and reducing duplication.
